When Terry Hay of New Zealand started his own company in Hawaii, he was new to the business world. He had earned a degree in economics from the University of California, but had never been in business before.
But Terry Hay of New Zealand learned something about himself. “Turns out I was good at business,” he recalls. His company, Kamaaina Distribution Company, quickly grew from a two-person operation into one of Hawaii’s top 250 businesses. Terry Hay of New Zealand surprised himself with the company’s success, which demonstrated his natural talent for entrepreneurship.
Terry Hay of New Zealand has held the kind of jobs most people have as young adults, when they are trying to find themselves. He has been a gardener, trash collector, and dishwasher, among other things. Terry Hay of New Zealand has also been a United States Marine, serving with distinction from 1966 to 1968. His tour included several months in Vietnam.
The Kamaaina Distribution Company did so well that Terry Hay of New Zealand was able to retire at the age of forty. Then he learned something else about himself: he wasn’t cut out for early retirement. Terry Hay of New Zealand sent back into business with a new company, Fresh Developments. Headquartered in Auckland, Fresh Developments created salads for supermarket chains across the country. Terry Hay of New Zealand saw the business prosper, convincing him he had made the right decision to come out of retirement.
Terry Hay of New Zealand later sold Fresh Developments and bought an existing flight catering business. That venture, too, did very well, becoming a big name in the airline food catering business.
Terry Hay of New Zealand retired for a second and probably final time in 2008.
